Innovation Meets R7

A RANGE of digital tools and innovative techniques have been used to deliver one of the UK’s most prestigious new office developments.

Leading property, residential, construction and services provider Kier Group employed the measures during the design and construction of “R7” – an impressive mixed-use commercial scheme that forms a key part of London’s 67 acre King's Cross regeneration.

Above and Below: R7 is a prestigious and eye-catching new development in the heart of London's King's Cross. 

Kier’s project team employed offsite manufacturing techniques to drive quality and reduce the programme while using a suite of digital tools - including “Holobuilder” and “Matterport”. 

Holobuilder provides a "virtual job walk" of construction sites by linking 360 degree progress photos to easily navigable plans of the building or project under development.

The browser-based platform allows stakeholders to review construction progress from any location. This is particularly useful for clients based offsite or overseas or for senior managers within construction businesses who may have a number of projects to supervise simultaneously. 

Matterport is a reality capture tool that creates complete three-dimensional virtual environments ("Matterport Spaces") from scans taken within a completed building or structure. 

Matterport Spaces can be navigated in web browsers or in immersive virtual reality headsets.

Now complete, the £70M R7 project - developed by Argent LLP and designed by Duggan Morris Architects - offers 14,400 square metres of office space across 10 storeys. There's also a publicly accessible “internal street” at ground floor level that boasts shops, restaurants and an Everyman Cinema.

The “Innovation Meets R7” documentary is the first in a series of video features that The B1M are developing with Kier Group.

“Future Construction” will explore how Kier is embracing innovation and digital technologies at a transformative time for the sector.
